I recently heard a really clever message in church about the spirit of Christmas as seen in the movie “Elf’. It isn’t typical to hear a message like that drawn out of the characters in a Christmas movie about an elf in New York. (If you haven’t seen it, the movie is worth a watch.) You may not see Jesus in it, but you will certainly see some noble and Christmasy themes. One theme that I haven’t often seen at Christmas is the theme of new life coming out of nasty surroundings.
Yes it’s December - again!
The end of the year is a good time to take stock I suppose, but it used to get me all worked up because of the review of the year, and awareness that I hadn’t met all my goals (who does?) and objectives, and now I was about to start new ones without the old ones complete. So guilt, feelings of failure, and a looming Christmas to-do list, would sweep over me and get me a bit heavy through what is arguably the best time of the year.

The ballot boxes are filling up as I write this and for many people election day is a day of deep anxiety. And I’m not referring to those whose names are on the ballots, or those working hard counting them.
I’m talking about the people casting the ballots!

You have probably heard it said that 'talk is cheap'. Meaning, you can talk a good game, or promise the moon but your actions mean more. And most of us would agree with that.
And yet, your words can cost you; a lot.

…..no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head.”
If you know the carol ” away in a manger then you know these words and they conjure up thoughts of a happy Christmas card scene of tranquility and feelings of gentleness and smiling sheep and cows gathered around a trough with Jesus inside it smiling.

My wife being Finnish didn’t grow up with the handy Scottish phrases, metaphors, sarcasm and what I like to call wittiness, that I grew up with.
Not every Scottish joke is funny but I have to say that with her Finnish accent, a few well placed Scottish-isms can be hilarious.
